Washing & Care Advice

Wash right – for the sake of the environment and your clothes
At Boob we work actively to review and limit our environmental impact at every level. The greatest energy consumption, however, occurs when you wash your clothes.By being mindful you can help reduce your own environmental impact, and at the same time your clothes will last longer. Here are a few tips!

Don’t wash clothes unnecessarily
Are your clothes really in need of a wash? If not just air them out.

Lower the washing temperature
At Boob we always label our garments with the highest permitted temperature. By selecting a lower washing temperature you can save energy. Most detergents work just as well at lower temperatures. A washing program in 40°C wash programme uses around half as much energy as a one in 60°C programme. We recommend that heavily soiled clothes are washed at the highest permitted temperature. But do not exceed the recommended temperature.

Fill your washing machine
Sort your clothes by colour and washing temperature. Fill your washing machine, but do not over-fill. A washing machine is full when you can place a clenched fist on top of the washing without compressing the clothes. Use an energy saving programme – most modern washing machines have one.

Choose a “green” detergent
Use an environmentally friendly detergent that is free from optical whiteners and phosphates, since these have a negative environmental impact when released into the environment. Use a detergent for coloured garments where appropriate. Always use the recommended dose. Overdosing will not make your clothes cleaner, but increases the risk of staining. To get the right dose, you need to know whether your water is hard or soft. Avoid fabric softeners as our garments are naturally soft and comfortable after washing. Reducing chemical additives saves on the environment.

Don't forget your wash
Never leave clothes in the machine after the cycle is completed. This can cause colour damage and streaks.

Avoid dry cleaning
Dry cleaning is a process which uses an organic solvent. Dry cleaning has a negative impact when solvents are released into the environment. No Boob garments require dry cleaning; all our clothes can be washed in a regular washing machine.

Allow your washing to self dry
We do not recommend tumble drying, as this causes unnecessary wear. It also requires a lot of energy, so air-drying is the best alternative. Shake out the garment (do not wring), and hang up to dry. Some long garments that should not be hung are marked with a flat drying symbol. The reason is that they are heavy when wet and risk being stretched.

If a drying cabinet is used, it is important not to set the temperature higher than the recommended washing temperature. Too high temperatures may shrink the garment. Air-drying, whenever possible, is much kinder to the environment.

Do not expose your clothes to direct sunlight when drying as this may bleach them.

Iron clothes at the correct temperature
Always iron at the temperature suggested on the care label. Preferably, turn the garment inside out before ironing. Thicker sections may fade if the iron is too hot.

Treat stains quickly
Treat all stains as quickly as possible. If the stain cannot be removed with water, use a stain remover. Follow the instructions on the package.

Recycle old clothes
When you no longer have use for your clothes, give them to a friend, sell them or donate them to charity.
